Medication Alternatives to Avodart
There are basically two types of medicines used to treat
BPH:
- 5-alpha reductase inhibitors: These medicines block the formation of DHT (dihydrotestosterone), helping to shrink the prostate. It may take as long as six months to see results with these medications. There are currently two of these medications available:
Of all the
medications for BPH, finasteride is the most similar to Avodart. Common side effects of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors include a decreased libido (sex drive),

- Alpha-1 blockers: These medicines help relax the muscles near the prostate. They have no effect on the size of the prostate, but they can work very quickly. These medications include:
