Avodart Alternatives
Avodart alternatives can include watchful waiting, surgery, and other drugs. Watchful waiting may be used when a man has no enlarged prostate symptoms (or if the symptoms are not too bothersome), and it involves close monitoring of the enlarged prostate. Surgery is an option if the enlarged prostate is causing severe symptoms or if medication is not helping. Some other drugs that may be used instead of Avodart to treat an enlarged prostate can include other 5-alpha reductase inhibitors or alpha-1 blockers.

Alternatives to Avodart: An Overview
For treating an enlarged prostate (known medically as benign prostatic hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH), there are several alternatives to using Avodart® (dutasteride). These alternatives include "watchful waiting," surgery, or other medications.
Avodart Alternatives Explained
The following sections describe specific substitutes for Avodart, including the possible benefits.
Watchful Waiting
Watchful waiting is a commonly-used medical term that refers to close monitoring of a condition, rather than a treatment. Watchful waiting is an especially appropriate alternative to Avodart if a man does not have any enlarged prostate symptoms, or if the symptoms are not too bothersome. Watchful waiting will include regular visits to your healthcare provider.
Surgery
If BPH is causing severe symptoms or if medication is not helping, surgery is an option. There are several different types of surgeries for an enlarged prostate.
