While it's true that BPH and erectile dysfunction often go hand-in-hand, it's not totally clear why.
Some of the treatments for BPH can cause impotence or a low sex drive. And, to make matters worse, some of the drugs used to treat BPH can interact with impotence medications, possibly limiting your options.
Many men develop retrograde ejaculation after BPH surgery, a condition that causes "dry" orgasms. While this might not seem like a big deal, some men find this condition to be emotionally devastating (and it's a serious problem if you want to have kids).
So what can be done? Plenty! Talk with your doctor.
Changing your BPH medicine, or adding a drug to treat erectile dysfunction might help. There is even one drug that is used to treat both at the same time!
Ask your doctor how surgery might affect your sex life.
And remember that open communication with your partner is key. Don't clam up about this sensitive issue, or you risk causing misunderstandings and hurt feelings.
