Flomax and Weight Gain
There are a few possible side effects of Flomax, and weight gain does not appear to be one of them. However, just because weight gain was not observed during clinical studies, it does not mean that the medication is not causing this problem for you. Therefore, talk to your healthcare provider if you notice any weight gain while taking Flomax.
An Overview of Flomax and Weight GainThere are a number of possible side effects with Flomax® (tamsulosin hydrochloride). However, weight gain does not appear to be one of them. This data comes from clinical trials where Flomax was extensively studied and its side effects were documented.
Understanding Side Effects and Clinical TrialsBefore medicines are approved, they must go through several clinical studies where thousands of people are given a particular medicine and are then compared to a group of people who did not take the medicine. In these studies, the side effects are always carefully documented. As a result, it is possible to see which side effects occur, how often they appear, and how they compare to the group not taking the medicine. Side effects are then usually separated into those side effects that occur in more than 1 percent of people (common side effects) and those that occur in less than 1 percent of people (rare side effects).
During these studies, weight gain was not reported as either a common or rare side effect of Flomax.
Keep in mind that just because weight gain was not seen during clinical studies with Flomax, it does not mean that the medicine is not causing this problem for you. Clinical trials are designed to factor out as many variables as possible in order to understand whether the medicine works and what its possible side effects are. Once the medicine is approved, a wider range of people begin taking the medicine and for longer periods of time. As is often the case, this can lead to other side effects being reported. However, once a medicine is approved, a drug does not usually continue to be studied. This means that certain side effects that occur very rarely may never be reported. For an individual person, it is difficult to say with complete assurance that a particular complaint is not due to a medicine, even if the complaint is not a reported side effect.
