Jalyn and Pregnancy
Jalyn, Pregnancy, and Birth DefectsDutasteride, one of the components of Jalyn, works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone). As a result, this decreases the amount of DHT in the body. Because DHT is important for male genital development, taking Jalyn during pregnancy may cause problems with the external genitals of a male fetus. When dutasteride was given to pregnant rats and rabbits, the male offspring developed abnormal genitals.
Tamsulosin, the other active component in Jalyn, did not cause harm to the developing fetus when given to pregnant rats and rabbits. However, because Jalyn contains both tamsulosin and dutasteride, and because of the problems caused by dutasteride during pregnancy, Jalyn should not be used in pregnant women.
Can My Partner Take Jalyn While I Am Pregnant? This medication does not appear to cause problems in the fetus when it is used by the male partner during pregnancy. Although some Jalyn is passed into the semen, it is much less than is found in the blood. In addition, even less is passed from the semen into a woman during sexual activity.
When dutasteride, one of the active components of Jalyn, was given to pregnant monkeys in doses up to 16 times the amount found in semen, no problems were seen with the development of the external genitals of the male fetuses.
If your partner is using Jalyn, it is extremely important that you do not touch any broken, leaking, or crushed Jalyn capsules. This medication can be absorbed through the skin. Although unbroken capsules are probably safe, it is probably best to avoid touching Jalyn capsules if you are pregnant or might become pregnant.
Final Thoughts and RecommendationsJalyn is approved for use in men only; it is not approved for any use in women. Taking it during pregnancy can cause birth defects, including problems with development of male genitals. Therefore, you should not take Jalyn if you are or may become pregnant. If you are pregnant or thinking about becoming pregnant and are considering using Jalyn, talk with your healthcare provider.
