Jalyn Uses

If you have an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH), a healthcare provider may prescribe Jalyn. This prescription medication can help relieve the symptoms of BPH, as it helps to shrink the prostate and increase urine flow. It is approved only for use in adults, and there are currently no off-label uses for Jalyn.

What Is Jalyn Used For?

Jalyn™ (dutasteride/tamsulosin) is a prescription medication licensed to treat an enlarged prostate, known medically as benign prostatic hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH. It is a combination medication containing dutasteride (Avodart®) and tamsulosin (Flomax®).

Understanding BPH

The prostate gland, located below the bladder, is part of the male reproductive system. The urethra, the canal that removes urine from the body, runs through the prostate.
An enlarged prostate is very common among older men. The prostate begins growing during puberty and continues to grow throughout most of adulthood. Usually, this is not a problem until men reach their 50s or 60s. When the prostate becomes too large, it can press against the urethra, causing problems with urination.
Specific BPH symptoms may include:
  • Frequent urination
  • Urinary urgency
  • The need to get up in the middle of the night to urinate
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Difficulty fully emptying the bladder when urinating
  • A weak or intermittent (stopping and starting) urine stream.
Some men can have BPH without having symptoms. One of the most common ways to detect an enlarged prostate is by the digital rectal exam. During this exam, a healthcare provider inserts a gloved finger into the rectum to feel the size and shape of the prostate.
Treatment for BPH includes "watchful waiting" (doing nothing, especially if there are no symptoms or the symptoms are not bothersome), medication, and surgery. Jalyn is one of the medications used for treating BPH.
