General Information on Dosing With Beta-Sitosterol

Considerations for people taking beta-sitosterol include the following:

  • Beta-sitosterol (and other plant sterol) margarines or spreads probably work best in place of other margarines, spreads, or butter. This means that they probably provide the most benefit for people who already consume these products. If you did not previously consume such products, you might get less benefit because you are adding fat to your diet.

  • Remember that beta-sitosterol spreads or margarines have fat and calories. Just because a product contains beta-sitosterol does not mean that you can eat all you want.

  • Be sure to discuss your use of beta-sitosterol products with your healthcare provider. He or she may want to monitor your cholesterol levels to see if the product is actually helping.

  • If you are unsure about anything related to your dosage or beta-sitosterol dosing in general, please talk with your healthcare provider.
