Prostate Home > Combining Levitra With Flomax
During clinical studies of people who took Levitra with Flomax, there was a noticeable drop in blood pressure, but it did not cause any symptoms of low blood pressure, such as lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting. If your healthcare provider thinks that it is safe for you to take Flomax and Levitra together, he or she may recommend that you take the lowest dose of Levitra to make sure that there is no significant drop in blood pressure.
Combining Levitra and Flomax: An OverviewFlomax® (tamsulosin hydrochloride) is a prescription medication that is used to treat an enlarged prostate (also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH). It is part of a group of medications called alpha blockers.
Levitra® (vardenafil) is a prescription medication that is used to treat erectile dysfunction (also referred to as ED or impotence). It is part of a group of medications called phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors, or PDE-5 inhibitors for short. Other medications in this group include tadalafil (Cialis®, Adcirca®), sildenafil (Viagra®, Revatio®), avanafil (Stendra™), and another vardenafil medication (Staxyn™).
In some cases, it can be dangerous to combine alpha blockers with phosphodiesterase inhibitors because it can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. This can result in lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting.
Can I Combine Levitra and Flomax?Based on the results of clinical studies, Flomax does not seem to interact significantly with Levitra or other similar medications. Studies have shown that other alpha blockers can cause dangerously low blood pressure if taken with Levitra or similar medications. However, in studies that focused on people who took Levitra with Flomax, this problem was not seen to the same extent.
One study published in the November 2004 edition of Urology tested the effects of taking Levitra with Flomax in people who had been taking Flomax for a least one month. While there was a noticeable drop in blood pressure, it did not cause any symptoms of low blood pressure.
If your healthcare provider believes that combining Levitra with Flomax is safe for your situation, he or she will probably recommend you take the lowest dose of Levitra (Levitra 5 mg). He or she will also make sure that you have been taking Flomax for a long enough period of time to know how it affects you. If Flomax is newly prescribed, your healthcare provider will also prescribe the lowest dose available to make sure that there is no significant drop in blood pressure when combined with Levitra.
