How Does Jalyn Work?

Jalyn combines two BPH medications that work in different ways. Dutasteride, one of the active components in Jalyn, is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. This means that it blocks the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme converts the male hormone testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT enlarges the prostate. By decreasing DHT levels, Jalyn helps to shrink the prostate over time, relieving enlarged prostate symptoms.
Tamsulosin, the other active component, belongs to a class of drugs called alpha blockers. It does not reduce the size of the prostate. Instead, it works by blocking alpha-1 receptors. These receptors are found in several places of the body, including the prostate gland.
Blocking alpha-1 receptors in the prostate gland relaxes the muscles of the prostate and the bladder neck (where urine leaves the bladder), helping urine flow more easily and thus relieving symptoms of BPH.

Can Children Use It?

Jalyn is not approved for children, as it has not been adequately studied in this age group. Because Jalyn works on certain hormones, such as testosterone and DHT, it should not be taken by children.

Off-Label Uses for Jalyn

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Jalyn for something other than treating the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (this would be known as an "off-label" use). At this time, there are no universally accepted off-label uses for Jalyn.
