Prostate Home > About Avodart

Avodart® (dutasteride) is a prescription drug used to help reduce the size of an enlarged prostate (known medically as benign prostatic hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH). Avodart works by lowering the body's levels of DHT, which is responsible for enlarging the prostate.

In clinical studies, men who took Avodart had significant improvement in their BPH symptoms -- including frequent urination, incomplete bladder emptying, and having to get up to urinate frequently during the night -- compared with the men who did not take it. This medication comes in the form of a capsule and is taken once a day. It may take as long as 3 to 12 months before seeing results.

Although it is generally well tolerated, Avodart has the potential to cause a number of side effects, including erectile dysfunction (ED), breast enlargement, and decreased libido.
