Generic Proscar: An Overview

Proscar® (finasteride) is a prescription medication that has been licensed as an enlarged prostate treatment. An enlarged prostate is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH.
 
Proscar works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which decreases the amount of DHT in the body. Since DHT is important for prostate enlargement, using Proscar to decrease DHT levels can help shrink the prostate and reduce enlarged prostate symptoms.
 
This medication was originally developed by Merck & Co., Inc. However, the patent has expired, and generic versions of Proscar are now available.

Generic Proscar is sold under the name finasteride and is available in one strength -- Finasteride 5 mg tablets.
