Generic for Proscar: An Overview

Proscar® (finasteride) is a prescription medication that has been licensed as an enlarged prostate treatment. An enlarged prostate is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia, benign prostatic hypertrophy, or BPH. Proscar works by blocking the conversion of testosterone into DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which decreases the amount of DHT in the body. Since DHT is important for prostate enlargement, using Proscar to decrease DHT levels can help shrink the prostate and reduce enlarged prostate symptoms.
 
Proscar was originally developed by Merck & Co., Inc. It has since come off patent, making it available as a generic.
