Enlarged Prostate Gland
It is common for the prostate gland (a walnut-sized gland that forms part of the male reproductive system) to become enlarged as a man ages. This condition is referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), benign prostatic hypertrophy, or an enlarged prostate. The enlargement doesn't usually cause problems until late in life. In fact, symptoms are rarely seen before age 40.
Although the symptoms vary, they most commonly involve changes or problems with urination. Treatment typically isn't needed in the early stages of the condition. Later on, however, a doctor may prescribe medications or surgery. About half the men with this condition eventually have symptoms that are bothersome enough to require treatment.
