Saw Palmetto Drug Interactions

When certain medications are taken with saw palmetto, drug interactions could occur. These interactions may increase your risk of bleeding or decrease the effectiveness of the medicines. Some of the medications that may cause negative drug interactions with saw palmetto include hormonal contraceptives, heparin (or heparin-like products), aspirin, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

 

An Introduction to Saw Palmetto Drug Interactions

Even though it is a natural herbal supplement, saw palmetto (Serenoa repens) can potentially interact with several medicines. Some of the medicines that may lead to saw palmetto drug interactions include:
 
  • Aspirin (Bayer® and others)
  • Clopidogrel (Plavix®)
  • Heparin or heparin-like products, such as:
 
    • Dalteparin (Fragmin®)
    • Enoxaparin (Lovenox®)
    • Tinzaparin (Innohep®)
 
 
 
  • Warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®).
